Fish Getting Bigger and Duck Season Closer!

We are getting ready for our Cast & Blast with Larry Csonka next week. So we had to go do some test fishing, haha. One of my buddies brothers were up from Colorado so we took them out to catch some flat fish and ling cod.

We had a great day! Ended up with our limit of halibut with the largest being about 70lbs and 6 legal ling cod with the largest being 44 lbs.

On top of that we pulled 5 gallons of shrimp on the way home.

Caribou 2009

We had plans to take a nice weekend trip for caribou this coming weekend. But due to so many animals being killed in the first few days of the hunt our Fish and Game closed the season early yesterday. So we quickly packed our gear yesterday morning when we heard the news and headed out for the woods.

We had hoped to go for a bigger bull, but since we only had a day of hunting we wanted some meat in the freezer. So we took these two nice cows. My wife’s animal was her first big game kill!!! I think I was more excited that she was!

Flat Fish & Clams

Last week we headed south to the grocery store (the ocean). About 12 hours later we had picked-up my parents from the Airport and were stopping in Homer. My first time down there to fish for me. Our goal was to catch some halibut for the freezer. We stopped on the way and got some nice razor clams. We hit the tides right luckily. We did pretty good thanks to some local duck hunter help on fishing spots! Ended up with about 200 lbs of fillets to send home with my parents and to fill our freezers. No real big fish, but some nice chickens as we say.

Fishing Alaska Style

dip_1If you are an Alaska Resident you are allowed to go to either the Copper River or the Kenai River and catch 30 salmon a season for your family.  And since we eat a lot of salmon I made the annual trip to the Copper River to catch our fish.  My buddy Edwin and I headed out on Friday around 2pm to beat other possible dippers to our spot.

The salmon we were after are Copper River reds, which commercially are some of the most valuable salmon in Alaska because of their great taste and bright red flesh.  We normally are allowed to keep one king salmon also per household also, but due to an bad run right now they Fish & Game closed the king season in that drainage.    Read the rest of this story »

Valdez Trip – The Real Start of Summer

"C-Haven"
“C-Haven”

This trip is really the start of summer in Alaska!  Heading to Valdez on June 6th for some more shrimp and some general relaxing fun!

The trip down was not too exciting this time.  Sadly the scenery becomes normally when you see it all the time, that is one of the reasons it is great bring people out in Alaska.  It reminds you how amazing the country is and how you felt the first time you saw it.

Thankfully the pot puller got installed for this trip, so life was going to be easy as far as shrimping goes.  I also spent some of the weekend redoing all of the electronics on “seaducksion”.  She got a nice new lowrance color chart plotter installed and all the wiring updated.  You got to love open boats and salt water, ever couple of season you just need to redo it all.

Valdez – First Spring Trip

Male Willow Ptarmigan on the ride to Valdez
Male Willow Ptarmigan

 Valdez – First Spring Trip

Our Alaska summers are short enough we try not take advantage of every free weekend we get.  So we packed up and head south to Valdez for our first trip of the summer season.  It was hardly considered summer in Alaska, it being only May 07.  All the lakes are still frozen and lots of snow left in the mountain pass.

Our goal was to catch some shrimp for the freezer and if we were lucky put some bear meat in the freezer also.

We had an amazing ride down.  What we had planned on being a quick ride, about 6 hours, took us upward of 10 hours.  And it was not because of bad road condition, but the constant wildlife we saw on the trip.  We started off early in the morning, picking up Corey at 5:00am.   By the time we were in Valdez we had taken pictures and lots of video footage of displaying ptarmigan, caribou, moose, goldeneye eagles and bald eagles.
